Canon Resource Link: Beep beep
Character History: Joseph is first introduced as a eighteen year old visitor to America from his home of Britain, quickly gaining a friend in a young man named Smokey, who was being accosted by corrupt policemen. Joseph helped Smokey out, even though it was Joseph's pocket that he had picked. Joseph displayed both his temper and his Ripple abilities — though he didn't know what those abilities were called, at the time — and saved Smokey and himself. Once he made his new friend, he took him and his grandmother, Erina, out to a restaurant where Smokey was berated for being black. Joseph then vowed to protect Smokey's honor — a vow that was backed by his grandmother — and toyed around a bit with the mafioso, predicting what he was about to say and accurately ascertaining the location of his knuckle dusters. It was then that the mafioso's boss figured out Erina and Joseph's identities, and promptly delivered the news that Speedwagon had died.

In truth, Speedwagon had been attacked by a friend of the family, a man named Straizo. Straizo later attacked Joseph, having turned into a vampire through the power of the Stone Masks. With the Ripple, Joseph killed Straizo, who warned him of something bigger than them both, something far more dangerous. Joseph then took off for Mexico, where he found a secret base being used by the Nazis, in which Speedwagon was alive and being kept. One of those very beings that Joseph was warned about was there, in that Nazi base — a humanoid being they called a Pillar Man, named Santana, that was quickly awoken. Santana laid waste to many of the Nazis, and despite the danger, Joseph was seen joking and laughing about the entire affair, not sure what to make of Santana at first. Joseph eventually defeated Santana — at the cost of Stroheim's death — and learned of three more Pillar Men in Italy, who were the makers of the Stone Masks that create vampires.

Once in Italy, Joseph met Caesar Zeppeli — a young man who was already proficient in the Ripple — and Lisa Lisa, a Ripple coach. Joseph didn't get along well with Caesar first, as he didn't seem to care too much about family that had already died. Caesar didn't take kindly to this, and at first, they couldn't stand one another. However, they took off for the Coliseum in Rome, where the three other Pillar Men slept, encased in rock, like Santana. The Pillar Men — Wham, Esidisi, and Kars — had been awoken; Wham quickly kills one of the humans, a young Nazi named Mark. In his honor, Caesar and Joseph step in to fight them.

Joseph, not nearly skilled enough to defeat the Pillar Men, loses his fight. Near death and waiting to be finished off, Joseph bluffs and boasts that if he were given a month he could win in a fight against Wham. Wham and Esidisi both implant rings in his body, rings they call Wedding Rings of Death. In a month's time, the rings will dissolve from around his throat and aorta, releasing poison. So Joseph trains under Lisa Lisa, beside Caesar, and in a month he faces off against Esidisi, when he's found on the island where his final exam is taking place, having murdered the exam proctor.

Esidisi — as well as Kars and Wham — were looking for the Red Stone of Aja, a flawless red stone that would make their Stone Masks perfect, allowing them to face the sun and become the pinnacle of evolution. Though he thoroughyl hated his exam proctor, Joseph stepped up to the proverbial plate to defeat Esidisi, keeping the Aja and his comrades safe. Joseph employed ingenuity and the sleight-of-hand tricks that he so loves, as well as all the Ripple skills he's picked up in his training, to get a one up on Esidisi and kill him. He takes the antidote for the Wedding Ring, contained in one of Esidisi's piercings, and heads back to the main island; but once he's there, Esidisi's brain — having secretly attached itself, unseen and unfelt on Joseph's back — implants itself in Suzie Q's own body, effectively possessing her. Caesar and Joseph both took care of Esidisi once and for all without killing Suzie, but it was too late to save the Aja; Esidisi had used Suzie to send it off to a hotel in Switzerland.

Once in Switzerland, Joseph and company come across the Nazis, confiscating the Aja. Kars quickly attacks the Nazis, killing many, leading to a showdown between Caesar, Stroheim, and Joseph against Kars. They come out on top, but the next day, they find what they think is a base for the remaining Pillar Men. After getting into a fight with Joseph over their families, Caesar takes off towards the base — a hotel — ready to kill Wham and Kars. Lisa Lisa tells Joseph Caesar's history, and Joseph then understands his friend. Emboldened with this knowledge, Joseph takes off with Lisa Lisa to support Caesar.

Yet by the time they get there, Caesar was fighting against Wham, in a battle he'd eventually lose. With his last bit of Ripple, he sent the antidote to the second and last Wedding Ring, as well as his headband, in a bubble of his own blood. Joseph, grieving, accepted this. Lisa Lisa attempted to act calm and collected in the face of her pupil's death, saying there was still work at hand, but Joseph called her out on her cigarette being backwards — a sign of her own distress. Joseph began to grieve for the loss of his dear friend, and once they found his body crushed under rubble, Joseph and Lisa Lisa both mourned him freely and openly.

Through the hotel they went, fighting zombies and vampires. Once they found Wham and Kars, they were soon outnumbered, and Lisa Lisa said she'd destroy the stone they so sought unless Wham and Kars fought herself and Joseph in two one-on-one battles. The battles were arranged, and soon came to be; Joseph fought against Wham in a chariot race, one that he won. Wham's severed head, quickly dying, protects him with his last bit of strength once he's attacked by a vampire; it's because of this that Joseph eased Wham's own pain and even called him his friend.

Kars ended up betraying Lisa Lisa, causing Joseph to have to fight him in her stead. He found himself incredibly enraged at Kars' betrayal, and at the end of their fight he was incredibly vindictive, telling Kars he had planned it all from the beginning. Yet to back up, Kars and Joseph fought, one upping one another with underhanded tricks, until the Nazis intervened. But right as they were about to kill Kars with a blast of ultraviolet light, Kars completed the Stone Mask with the Aja, then ascending to a higher form. He was able to transform any part of his body into that of any creature on Earth — a squirrel for a hand, arms into wings, etc.

Joseph then decided that he had to use his special technique — running away. Yet his plan was enacted; he stole a plane from the Germans and led Kars away to a volcano, where they were to finish their fight. With Stroheim's intervention and help, Joseph won the fight, although he had lost his left hand in the process. Redirecting Kars' attack with the Aja resulted in an eruption that sent Kars into orbit, then frozen in the vacuum of space, and doomed to circle Earth forever.

Joseph, presumed dead, appeared at his own funeral weeks later with his new wife, Suzie Q; she had failed to send the telegram informing his comrades that he was alive and being nursed back to health.

And then there's Joseph's canon point, but as to his role in events since ...

In the years afterwards, Joseph had a child with Suzie after moving to America, a daughter named Holy. Holy, once grown, then married a Japanese man and moved to Japan — a move that made Joseph detest the Japanese. Years passed, and one day Holy called Joseph, requesting his help with an "evil spirit" that seemed to be possessing her son, Jotaro Kujo. Joseph knew exactly what was going on; a couple years prior, he'd been afflicted with something similar. His Stand (explained in the section below) had manifested, and now Jotaro's was doing the same.

It was shortly after Jotaro learned of his Stand that his mother's own was manifesting, itself. However, she wasn't strong enough to host it, so she became very ill, to the point that doctors could do nothing, and her death was inevitable unless they could kill Dio — an enemy to the Joestar bloodline — and end the curse.

Joseph takes on much more of a support/side role in Stardust Crusaders; he's very much mellowed out and gone level-headed enough to be the leader of their group, though his grandson Jotaro is the true protagonist of the third part. He fights furiously through many battles in many countries with enemy Stand users, all for the sake of killing Dio and ending the curse on his daughter. Yet in the final battle, Joseph quite nearly lost his life; were it not for a blood transfusion from Dio himself, Joseph would have passed away.

A jokester right to the end, as he woke up from the successful transfusion, he decided to play a prank on Jotaro — saying he was Dio, possessing Joseph's body. This nearly ended up in a pummeling from Jotaro. They then took the remains of Dio's body out into the sun for it to dissolve under its warm rays. Thereafter they said goodbye to Polnareff, their only remaining comrade on the journey to kill Dio.

And ten years after the events of Stardust Crusaders, in Diamond is Unbreakable, Joseph has grown even older and more feeble, and even more of a side character; he has to walk with a cane, suffers cataracts, and wears dentures. No longer is he as fiery as he once was, but he's absolutely still just as well-meaning. He has an illegitimate son — Josuke Higashikata — with a Japanese woman, Tomoko. Though his wife Suzie Q was incredibly upset with him over him cheating on her with Tomoko, he still wrote Josuke into his will, and attempted to use his Stand to get a picture of him, leading to the events of Diamond is Unbreakable.

There's a moment in the fourth part where he comes across a Stand-user, but its a baby that simply goes invisible, and turns her surroundings invisible as well the more stressed she becomes.

Once this baby — later named Shizuka — disappeared in a nearby lake, Joseph and Josuke were desperate and frantic to find her. Joseph ended up cutting himself, so the blood would make it easier to find Shizuka. His role in Diamond is Unbreakable is a lot less than the previous ones, but he can still be counted on as an important ally.
Abilities/Special Powers: Joseph’s main mode of attack in Battle Tendency is an ability that the trained few can use, called the Ripple, or Hamon. Ripple acts much like the energy of the sun, in that it’s able to harm vampires, zombies, and Pillar Men. It’s channeled through one’s breath and blood, so if someone’s breathing were to be disrupted or if they were being bled out, their ability to use the Ripple would be severely impaired. While it’s, more often than not, shown to combat the undead and the Pillar Men, it can be used on other beings as well, and doesn’t hurt them unless the wielder wishes; for example, Lisa Lisa and Caesar both used it as a hypnosis technique, and Baron Zeppeli used it to heal. It can also be channeled through water — allowing one to walk on it; or soap bubbles — to make them sharp and unpoppable; or scarves — to use them as conductors.

There are, presumably, as many applications of the Ripple as one can imagine. As Joseph often employs incredible ingenuity, he has several ways to attack with the Ripple — a Zoom Punch, where he dislocates his shoulder to get more range; one called Overdrive ( including a couple variations on this ) which is simply a large blast of Ripple; and a technique he channels through American Clackers called a Clacker Volley. The Clacker Volley, while it took a bit for him to master, proved to be incredibly helpful and lethal both.

Just before the events of Stardust Crusaders ( past this canon point ), Joseph gains another ability — Hermit Purple, which is also known as his Stand. Stands vary from host to host; some take the form of humanoids, others take on more shapes like acidic goo, guns, and other such objects. The possibilities seem limitless. Joseph's, however, manifests as purple vines. These vines give him the ability to divine certain current happenings, through connecting with electronic devices — mainly expensive cameras or televisions.

Through Hermit Purple used on cameras, Joseph was able to use what was called "spirit photography", which showed him photographs of Dio, miles and miles away in an unknown location. Because of this spirit photography, Jotaro was able to detect a fly in the photo, then discerned by Abdul to be one native to Egypt. Once used on a television, the channels flipped through, giving him an audible warning to beware of a traitor in their midst ( though the traitor was really just an impostor ).

Hermit Purple was also shown as being able to discreetly channel his Ripple energy — by that age, mostly unused — when he wrapped the Stand around his torso. The aim was to use that energy, discreetly, to kill Dio once he was inevitably stricken. Though this failed, it was a clever plan, displaying his keen mind for fighting and tactics.
Third-Person Sample: Wonderland is hardly impressive.

Or so Joseph would make it seem; he has an incredible air of nonchalance about himself as he strolls the grounds, hands stuck in his pockets. He finds himself bereft of much thought, eyeing over the plants in the garden, until he brings out a gloved hand to brush over petal and leaf. All he's been able to do since he got here is walk. And walk and walk and try to keep the worrying at bay.

It's so incredibly unlike him, that fretting, that he's quite nearly gone mad under its weight. So he doesn't give in, pushing away the thoughts — where are you? I just got you — with action. There's places still unexplored by Joseph, namely the outside; he's seen the gardens, yes, and heard the stories of the forest. But where he really wants to go is where the action is, or at least where rumors lie. The Checkerboard Hills. Yet, ah, where is it again ... ?

Damn, he really wasn't paying attention so much the the words the girl was saying to him — "They're at the edge of the grounds!" — but rather, her body. Married to a wonderful girl he may be, but God damn was that one cute.

Still.

Joseph is not where he wants to be.

But he finds himself free of worrying about his mother, his friends, his pregnant wife, instead focused on the task at hand. Hills. Right.

Where the hell ... ?

He brings his hands to his temples, sucking in a deep breath and then blowing it out in a manner entirely too dramatic for simply getting lost. It's not really that big of a deal, is it? It's not like he has anything better to do; so he walks and walks some more, and what he ends up finding is much, much better than the prospect of solving the mystery of the Checkerboard Hills.

It's shops. Rows and rows, and the first couple he happens across are carrying some of his favorite comics, even ones he's never heard of before. Joseph takes and takes the comics, grabbing anything that looks interesting or familiar. Yet it's only when he puts the stack up on the counter that he realizes.

"Oh, no! I'm broke!" he cries, hands once again finding their way to his temples, "Broke as a joke!"

First-Person Sample: ( Joseph is hardly one for waiting to figure things out, preferring to just dive in, and he's certainly not one for technology like this. Yet after some time with messing around with the device and asking around a bit, he's figured out how to transmit video.

He's picked it up quickly, just like he picks up everything else.

He's all grins at the camera. )

Hey ... ?!

( God, he's holding it too close to his face. )

I got this thing working ... I'm just wondering if there's anyone I know out there?

( He pulls a bit of a face, puffing out one of his cheeks and scratching at the other. )

Y'know. Suzie. Smokey. ...

( Joseph goes a bit distant, with his sentence trailing off, but it's only for a nearly imperceptible moment. He laughs shortly thereafter. )

If you're out there, Suze, come find your man — my heart's achin'!

( Fumbling a bit with it, tongue stuck out, Joseph finally clicks the feed off. )
